This is the ramp area: it has a very shalllow flat that tapers from about 3 feet down to 7 feet before it drops severly off into 30 feet at the end. In the spring time, smallies use this flat to spawn in especially near the drop. On the right as you leave the ramp there is a long underwater point. On the left, there is a short underwater point.
This is a small cove west of the ramp area. It has a few weeds in the late spring and summer. Large mouth spawn in this area in the spring. If food is found here, the large mouth and small mouth will stay in the area. The small mouth tend to stay out in the 8-10 foot areas and deeper. The bottom is mostly gravel and sand.
This is a small bay in the west end of the pond. There are a few docks in the bay and scattered weeds. It has a depth of about 10 feet close to 50 yards from shore. It shallows up pretty quick. Small mouth and large mouth can be seen chasing the bait fish throughout the bay. The water drops off very quickly along the beach as you head North. In periods of high water, the largemouth will get under the trees.
There is a runoff from a marsh in this corner. There is a flat with rocks and weeds that drops severely into 30 feet of water. As Pete says in his techniques, jerkbaits are great; slugos, senkos etc. are also good. Top water is a good choice in this area at any time.. The weeds continue along the drop and worms or jigs should be fished deep. During the summer algae blooms stain the water and heavier line can be used, but during the spring, the water is usually clear and small line diameters must be used.
This is a small flat in the North end of the pond. It goes out about 50 yards off shore and is about 40 yards long. In the spring time the small mouth gather around here for pre spawn. During the summer months the algae bloom usually hides the depth of this flat. Fish the 8-10 foot drop area with jigs and small worms or carolina rig. Use jerk baits and spinner baits on the flat, especially when it is the windy side.
This shoreline has a steep drop near it. As you "bend" to the north the contour comes up (shallow). In the spring both the large mouth and the small mouth use this gravel bottom area for spawning beds. In the summer there are docks out, and I have found that both species get under them.
This is a major point on the pond. Use your favorite tactics to fish points. It has rocks, but only scattered weed cover. At night I have caught some big small mouth by using a black spinnerbait. In the spring the small mouth will be a hit or miss on the point, usually opting to chase the herring for food. If the herring get pushed up on the point with the wind then I use a spinnerbait or jerk bait.
This area of the pond contains an underwater point, a saddle, and a flat leading to the island. The underwater point has 2 saddles; one going toward the shoreline and the other toward the island. The depth goes to about 10 feet then comes back up to about 5 feet and tapers down along the point. The point extends into the pond about 80-90 yards. I prefer to carolina rig this area, the contour changes so much and the carolina rig keeps me in contact with the bottom. In the shallow parts of the point, I will use a tube bait or a small jig. The saddle that runs to the island side, also dips to 10 feet and then comes back up and joins the flat in front of the island. This is prime area in the spring and in the early morning hours of the summer. Top water and jerk baits are awsome.
This is a small flat. It used to lead to a back pond, but the water is so low that there is no way to get back in the pond. The flat contains tires and lots of logs. The small mouth relate to these structures especially during the spring. Largemouth also frequent this flat, more so than other parts of the pond. The edge of the flat, drops dramatically to 15-20 feet in areas. I use the carolina rig again with 6 inch lizards in this area. You don't know what you're going to catch- largemouth or small mouth.
The island is very shallow especially now, in the drought. When the water is high, sometimes in the sprind, you can flip in the bushes which are growing along the edge for largemouth. On the East side is a ridge, that Pete de Moya talks about in his techniques. The South side drops nicely into 12-15 feet and jerk baits work good. In the early morning or late evening, top water works really good, right on the break line going around the South side of the island.
Large cove area, with 14 feet maximum depth. The weed line is very shallow. The small mouth use this area to spawn, but quickly move to the deeper water. Large mouth will frequent the weeds that grow in the summer. Late spring and into summer, the small mouth will be out in the 14 foot area, jigs and carolina rigs are best.
